DRILLING FAQ

Have any questions about our borehole drilling service? Have a look through our FAQ. If you need to know more feel free to contact us for more information.
How much does it cost to drill a borehole?

This cannot be accurately quoted beforehand as every single borehole differs in terms of the underground geological (rock) formation and water table depth. However, a standard quotation can be made for an average borehole cost in your area; but the final invoice can differ from the initial quote.

Please take careful note of the following: The borehole cost can be greatly affected by the amount of casing (sleeving) that might need to be installed within the borehole if the borehole’s sidewall is unstable. This means that if a borehole is drilled and the rock is stable the cost of the borehole will be lower, because less casing is required. If the rock is unstable, extra casing will have to be installed up to a certain depth of the borehole to stop the rocks from collapsing on your pump and closing your borehole.

The need for extra casing can only be assessed once the borehole is drilled.

How do you charge for a borehole?

There are certain standard costs, mainly the transport of the rig to site and other small items to develop a borehole, if it has water.

The biggest cost will be for the drilling itself and it is charged per meter deep and the same applies for the sleeving installed. This means that the deeper the borehole and/or the amount of required sleeving, the more costs will be incurred.

Is there water everywhere underground?

Unfortunately not. For instance, some areas can produce high volumes of water within the first 10m of drilling and in other areas there can be very little to no water for 300m of drilling.

Can you look for water underground?

Debatably there is no way to specifically look for water underground. Instruments and geological maps are used to identify certain rock formations underground that might hold water. This improves the likelihood of getting water, but it does not guarantee it. The size of your property can also limit access to the correct underground formations. Also bear in mind that the possible depth of water cannot be accurately determined with these instruments, but it can give a guideline maximum depth to try and drill.

Diviners has successfully found water underground, although this method has mixed opinions from the drilling and geological industry – your own discretion can be used for this method.

Do you charge for a borehole that turns out dry?

Regretfully yes. The cost for us to drill a borehole is the same regardless of if there is water in it or not. Items like the casing (sleeving) won’t be charged because it will not be used in a hole that is dry.

All the risks for drilling, costs and likelihood of water will be discussed with the client before any drilling commences. We will also update the client continuously whilst the drilling is taking place to ensure that the client never feels that unnecessary costs were incurred due to a lack of communication.

Is all underground water safe to drink and clean?

Sometimes no. Some areas might have groundwater that is brackish (salty), hard, and/or polluted. It can also happen that the water is high in minerals that compromise the quality of water.

Also note that the quality of the water cannot be determined beforehand. The EC (Electroconductivity and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) can be tested immediately when water is found in the borehole with a handheld device. This EC and TDS can give only an indication of the quality of the water.

A full broad-spectrum test can only be done by sending a sample of the water to a lab to be tested at the client’s cost.

Poor water quality can be treated via different methods, this will however be at extra cost for the client. There are other companies that specialize in these treatment methods, unfortunately not us.

How long does it take to drill a borehole?

It depends on depth drilled, the amount of sleeving and the rock formations.  Most boreholes take 1 to 2 days, on average, to drill.  Some boreholes can take up to approx. 5 days.
